James T. Lee, MD, PhD, FACS

Dr. Lee has spent most of his professional life in laboratories, classrooms, or operating
rooms. His career has been centered at universities and hospitals in the Midwest where
he conducted research, studied surgical infection control processes, and led surgical
teams as an attending surgeon.
He earned his BA degree from the University of Texas, his MS and PhD degrees
(chemistry) from the University of Illinois, and his MD from the University of Minnesota,
where he subsequently trained in general surgery. During 20-plus years at the
Minneapolis DVA Medical Center, he served as Associate Chief of Surgery and Director
of Surgical Infection Epidemiology. At the University of Minnesota, he was Professor of
Surgery, teaching surgical residents and medical students. He has been a consultant to
numerous companies regarding infection prevention procedures, systems, and
strategies.
Dr. Lee is a sought-after surgery lecturer and serves on the editorial boards of four peerreviewed
academic journals. He has published extensively regarding surgical infection
prevention and health care improvement. His expertise is recognized by both academic
and medical communities, and he brings every bit of that expertise to AORN Works.
